News 2015 winter – AMG

Many thanks to all the Darling Museum Friends who attended the AGM and ensured that we had the necessary quorum. John Mills stepped down as Chairman and willingly agreed to stay on as vice Chairman. Linda Mumm was elected Chairlady and we wish her well in her new position.

Regrettably Ingrid Wilson was not available for re-election due to ill health; we wish her a speedy recovery. Alexis Cox was not available for re-election and the rest of the committee extended their sincere thanks to her for her years of service and dedication to the Museum. The rest of your committee comprises Gill Esler (Treasurer), Dianne le Roux (Secretary) , Jane Wallace, “Van” van Rensburg, Jeanette Duckitt, Nicky …, and Cathy Hall. The 2 co-opted members are Rika Mitchell and Sue Hooks.

The entire committee is enthusiastic and eager to organise interesting and fun events in the ensuing year.

The annual Crafters Market & car boot sale were held on International Museum Day, Saturday, May 16th. The variety of crafters showcasing their skills was impressive and attracted a good crowd. In addition to the various crafters demonstrating & selling their wares, there was face painting for the youngsters, a diverse assortment of car boot sale items, raffles and of course the ever-popular tea, coffee and eats table. Our thanks to all participants and volunteers for their respective contributions to the success of the event. If you missed it this time around, there is always next year.

The Darling Museum was visited by some 3 355 people during 2014 – an increase of 6,68% on the previous year. We are very grateful to the support of our Friends of the Museum who so often bring along their friends and family and also encourage visitors to spend some time meandering around the museum. Without fail, visitors are amazed by the size of our collection and enchanted by the layout and design of the displays. Some comments from our visitors’ book:

Auction at the Museum

auctioneerThe collection and preservation of items related to the Darling community and its historical past is a critical part of our mission. The cut-off point of the museum collection is around the 1930’s at this stage, a date which is reviewed every 10 years or so in order to keep collecting historical items without getting stuck at a point in time.

It is sometimes the case that we receive donations of items much younger than the cut -off point or items which are really not in any way related to Darling, its people or history. All donations are always great fully accepted and the museum committee decide on the suitability of each and every item. There are however always some items for which we cannot find a home in the Museum. We have planned to hold a public auction once a year. At this event all “young” items or items not related to our corner of the world will be auctioned professionally to raise funds for the museum. We look forward to a fun day, and auction prices which will suit everybody’s pockets and also those of serious collectors.
