International Museum Day 2018

The worldwide community of museums celebrated International Museum Day on and around the 18th May 2018.

International Museum Day serves as a platform to raise public awareness of the role museums play in the development of society today, on an international level. Participation in this event is growing among museums all over the world. In 2017, more than 36 000 museums participated in the event in some 157 countries.

On Saturday 19th May, Darling Museum participated in this annual event by waiving the normal entrance fee to the museum and staging a Crafters Market. A variety of crafters displayed their crafts and showcased their skills. The following crafts were on display; quilting (Cheryl Mezzetti, Rienna Wingfield, Mary Dobson), knitting & crocheting (Maria Boonzaaier, Naomi Makumbe), butter making, weaving and spinning (Bessie Visser and team: Ragel Arries, Johanna Bruintjies, Charlotte Arries), calligraphy (Jenny Meyer), leatherwork (Gavin Weston), felting (Sharon McClure), contemporary art (Fran Sexton, Rosemary Anne), hypertufa workshop (Cathy Hall), Our sincere thanks to all the crafters who willingly gave of their time to participate in this event, and also, to those visitors who visited the museum.
