News Autumn 2018 – Agricultural Barn Renovations

Many thanks to all the Darling Museum Friends who attended the AGM and ensured that we had the required quorum. Your current committee comprises Cathy Hall (Chairperson), Peter King (Treasurer), Dianne le Roux (Secretary), Jane Wallace, Sue Hooks ,“Van” van Rensburg and Sharon McClure. Karen Moyle was voted on as a new member, many thanks Karen. Michael Rangasamy represents the Swartland Council.

The committee’s priority during the current year will be to heighten public awareness of the museum. It has become apparent that we need to do more to market this treasure of ours. To this end, our website is to be redesigned. We will expand it to incorporate more pictures, an upcoming events section, snippets about new acquisitions and items of interest. The intention is to make it a “living” website, if you catch my drift. Peter Hall has very kindly agreed to build the website pro bono. Thank you Peter. We will also investigate opportunities to advertise in local media on a more regular basis.
The meeting also payed tribute to Maggie Fowle. Maggie has contributed to the functioning of the Museum from December 2001 and did her last duties in December 2017. She has manned the front desk, helped with conducted tour groups through the Museum, conducted the historical walk through the streets of Darling and many other tasks. Maggie, thank you so much for your enthusiastic support over the years. As a token of our appreciation, the meeting nominated Maggie as a Lifetime Honorary Member of the Friends of the Darling Museum for services rendered to the Association over the past 16 years.

The AGM was followed by an informal talk by John Duckitt. As you no doubt already know, John’s family has been in and around Darling since the 1800’s and John chatted about various items of historical interest. It was an extremely interesting and informative talk. Thank you once again John for sharing your stories with us.

Thank you to all those Friends of the Museum who renewed their annual membership at the AGM. For those of you who were unable to attend the AGM, please pop into the museum to renew your membership , a mere R40 for the year. This will entitle you to free access to the museum and a special discount for all events. Please remember to take your membership cards with you so that Dianne can give you your updated sticker. Many thanks in advance, from your Committee!!

We have recently undertaken the mammoth task of screeding the floor of the barn which houses all the agricultural equipment. Our sincere thanks to the following people, Nicolaas Basson (for the water carts),Michael Duckitt (for water), Oubaas Kirsten, Nico Loubser and Elwee Colling (for helping with the move), Gerard Loubser (co-ordinating with Altus) and John Duckitt (for the loan of a tarpaulin). And of course, sincere thanks to Charles van der Spuy for co-ordinating and arranging the entire operation.

We will be celebrating International Museum’s Day on Saturday 19th May. This will take the form of a Crafter’s Market and we appeal to any crafters to contact Dianne if you are willing to participate at this event. We are hoping to showcase butter making, calligraphy and various other crafts. Dianne can be contacted on 022 492 3361.
